11165 A PAIR OF EARLY NEOCLASSICAL PALE BLUE PAINTED GROUND AND GILDED ARMCHAIRS Venetian. Circa 1770. Measurements: Height: 35″ (89 cm) Width: 24″ (61 cm) Depth: 17 1/2″ (45.5 cm).



Research
Of light blue and polychrome painted and gilded wood. Upholstered back and seats. The tapering upholstered backs centered by a Roman profile relief mask on a marbleized ground from which carved ribbons issue. The shaped armrests attached to a cabriole-shaped support. The upholstered seat above a front rail centered by a classical roman mask flanked by carved square paterae. Each square tapering leg headed by a waisted collar and terminating in a molded square foot. All painted with floral and berry design over a light blue ground. The blue ground in good original condition, the floral paintwork strengthened. Webbing and upholstered substrate probably original. Old metal bracing to some legs.
