11611 A LARGE BRONZED AND GILT WOOD CIRCULAR CONVEX MIRROR WITH MOST UNUSUAL, PROBABLY NAUTICAL, RING BOLT DESIGN, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL LION MASK HANGING ROUNDEL English. Early Nineteenth Century. Measurements: Width: 48 3/4″ (123.8 cm); Height: 47 3/4″ (121.2 cm); Approximate height including roundel: 60 5/8″ (154 cm); Diameter of frame: 40 3/4 (103.5 cm).



Research
Of bronzed and gilded wood. The circular D molded frame with outer flat gilded edge contains a plain fascia set with applied giltwood five pointed faceted stars. The inner ebonized reeded slip encloses the origin convex mirror plate. The outer sides with three ring form extensions the larger surmounting element resting a rectangular block. Hanging roundel with plain gilded frame and bronzed male lion mask. Witness mark indicating a further extension to underside. Gilding and bronzing nearly all original after careful removal of later coating.

This remarkable, austere exercise in Regency furniture design most likely owes its inspiration to nautical themes that were so current at around the time of Admiral Nelson’s famous maritime victories.
