    The present painting, by American artist Edward Lamson Henry (1841-1919), depicts the exquisite interior of the Parlor of 56 East 93rd Street, New York and is dated 1909. Another interior design watercolor of the same house by Henry, is today in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, and is inscribed on the reverse Interior Design – Library / 56 East 93rd St. N.Y.C. / E.L. Henry.

    Henry was keenly interested in architecture; his personal collection contained a large number of prints and photographs recording contemporary buildings and “there is much evidence…that [he] fought to mobilize public opinion to preserve historic landmarks.”
