Of gilt bronze and painted ceramic. Each ovoid body is surmounted by a system of rococo gilt bronze ornament from which issue three conforming candle arms each raised on a rocaille gilt bronze base.
Henry Dasson (1825-1896) was one of the most celebrated nineteenth century French bronzier-ébénistes, famous for his high-quality gilt-brass mounts. His work showed an interest in the styles and old masterpieces of previous eras, particularly Louis XIV, XV and XVI.
The present candelabra, with their scrolled foliate and rocaille bases and asymmetric floral candle arms, are clearly inspired by the rococo prototypes Dasson admired. The gilt mounts wrap around ceramic ovoid bodies at the center of each, painted as if to simulate a large, spotted egg. The fascination with nature and the exotic in 16th-18th century Europe was reflected in the incorporation of “exotic” materials such as hardstones, horn, ivory, shells, coconuts and ostrich eggs into decorative objects, which, intended more for display than daily use, decorated the homes of the wealthy and intellectual of the period.
