Research:
Of ebonized wood, polychrome silk and watercolor. The rectangular box with downward sloping lid framing panels of silkwork embroidery with watercolor to the front frieze, sides and top, with central keyhole to the frieze.
The present writing box is comprised of five panels of differing sizes, of silkwork embroidery with watercolor detailing, set within a series of complex ebonized moldings designed to display the panels to best advantage. The main focus of the box is the largest panel on the lid depicting the well-known classical tale of Europa and the Bull, and it takes the form of a writing slope, an early form of writing desk.
