Research:
Of faux granite decorated wood. The circular top with ‘D’ molded edge rests upon a cavetto shaped frieze containing a single finely fitted polished maple drawer and opening mechanism to the underside. A gardrooned and circular turned stem rests upon a carved lily petal. All raised on a circular domed plinth base. Some old losses and wear to finish on the top now restored.
Marks:
Bears old label:
Frau Maria Prapisch (?)
Kreis XVI (?)
……gruberplatz
Provenance:
A Viennese Collection.
The faux granite decoration on the present table appears to be without precedent in nineteenth century furniture design, while the form of the table is appropriate to its faux stone finish, as it seems to take for its inspiration Roman bird baths, as found in Herculaneum and depicted on wall paintings.
