Of mahogany. Each chair with molded curved back from which issue continuous splaying flat armrests terminating in a carved rosette. The arms are supported by a continuous square tapering front legs carved with a pendant guilloche motif. The rear legs of short saber form. The back seat and sides fully upholstered in vertical pattern striped velvet.
The present pair of chairs recalls the twentieth-century interpretation of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles promoted by the interior design team of Süe et Mare during the Art Deco period.
Süe et Mare exhibited extensively at 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, including the design for a contemporary art museum, and fostered collaborations with independent artists in their production of a wide range of items, including fabrics, tableware, and furniture. According to André Mare: “It would be a great mistake if the decorative arts should be left entirely in the hands of craftsmen or specialists. The creative impulse must come from the finest, most cultured sources, otherwise it will lack vitality and truth…The same fire and faith must animate the artistic evolution of a chair no less than that of a painting or sculpture.”
