Oil on canvas.
Marks:
Dated to the reverse ‘Ao 1706’.
Provenance:
A Swiss Private Collection.
The present piece almost certainly served as an antependium, or an altar frontal, which, as its name implies, was a decorative panel fixed to the outward facing side of an altar in the Christian tradition. It is also called a paliotti from the Roman pallium, meaning a cloth of precious fabric.
