111519 A VERY RARE PAIR OF STRAW WORK MARQUETRY EXOTIC LANDSCAPES CONTAINING SEVENTEENTH CENTURY EMBLEMATIC IMAGERY SIGNED ‘CHH’ FOR CARL HINRICH HERING (FL. 1695–1736) Probably Lübeck. One Picture dated 1718. Measurements: Unframed: Height: 6 ” (15.5 cm); Width: 8″ (20.3 cm); Framed: Height: 8 1/8 ” (20.6 cm); Width: 10 1/4″ (26 cm).



Research
Of colored straw work depicting exotic landscapes with various engraved captions in German and French. The chevron pattern giltwood and cut gesso frames possibly original. Minor repairs.

These exquisite straw marquetry views of delightful exotic subject matter are assembled as bucolic landscapes and contain vignettes taken from various seventeenth century emblem books. Both pictures are numbered, and one is signed and dated C.H.H. fecit 1718. This signature belongs to Carl Hinrich Hering, a marquetry artist from Lübeck active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century.
