11656 A SUPERB QUALITY GEORGE IV FIDDLEBACK MAHOGANY FOLIO TABLE INCORPORATING SLIDING TRAYS AND RATCHETED EASELS English. First Quarter of the Nineteenth Century. Measurements: Width: 56 1/2″ (143.5 cm); Closed Depth: 42″ (106.6 cm); Height: 34 3/4″ (88 cm); Approximate depth with folio trays fully extended: 67″ (170 cm).



Research
Of mahogany. The rectangular top with removable reading ledges to each end (one of which replaced), dividing in the center to fold-up as reading surface, above a frieze fall that opens to reveal four green baize-lined retractable folio trays (the green baize renewed), each with hinged brass support rods underneath. Each corner of the frieze with carved anthemion and lotus decoration within a rectangular frame, the whole raised on four turned and reeded detachable legs on brass casters.

This complex bespoke folio table displays an exceptionally high level of quality and design, and its combined features all indicate that this piece was constructed for an important private library or study to contain a valuable collection of documents, drawings, prints or maps.
