Research
Of scagliola in imitation of Verde Antico marble with gilt bronze mounts. Of sarcophagus form, the panelled sides with gilt bronze molding, surmounted by a replaced cushion mold, the canted angles with reeded bronze panels, the two short sides mounted with lion-mask ring-handles, the whole raised on four gilt bronze paw feet.

The present cellarette is a fine example of Regency design, which drew heavily on the study of surviving artifacts from the ancient world, particularly from Greece, Rome and Egypt, and incorporated the ancient models into modern furniture forms. Here the classical elements center on the tapered sarcophagus form and boldly modeled paw feet, adapted from ancient Roman cinerary boxes.
